Heartworm Test FAQs

Our 4 in 1 test for heartworm, lyme, anaplasmosis, or ehrlichia is: Convenient, Highly Accurate and is the same Elisa testing service that your veterinarian uses to get the same results. Many customers use Ivermectin(which is the exact same drug as Heartgard) instead of Heartgard preventatives which saves 90-95% of the cost of yearly heartworm prevention. Ivermectin is sold at most farm, equine, or pet supply companies-catalogs. This SAVES $30-150 depending on the weight of your dog. See "e-how" or other websites for articles written by veterinarians that show how safe this is, how to dose, etc.

 How Accurate is your test?

You get the same accurate veterinary lab results since we perform the same ELISA test in exactly the same way that your veterinarian does. We are a veterinary lab.

How do we collect the Sample?
It only takes 3-5 drops of blood. It is simple, easy to do. Collect the sample, and mail to our veterinary lab. If you use a groomer have them collect the sample as most groomers will readily agree that they do accidently get one nail to short occasionally on every dog they do. They do not do this on purpose, it just happens. You  could also ask a friend who is a nurse, doctor, tech, etc. to do an IV. Go to "e-how" or other websites where veterinarians give you helpful hints on how to collect a blood sample via IV, a simple puncture of the skin, or a nail trim. Or just do a routine nail tim with some Quick Stop at your side to stop the bleeding. Remember that when your veterinarian does an intravenous puncture on your pet that the trip and the test is very stressfull and many times very difficult---most absolutely hate it, so how best to collect the sample always depends. You can have any nurse, doctor, vet tech, or person who has done IVs help to collect it or you can do a routine nail trim. Anyone who has ever performed a nail trim realizes that it is nearly impossible to do a nail trim without getting at least one nail a little too close. That's all you do to collect a sample. Just do your routine nail trim, when you do the inevitable, collect 2-4 drops of blood in the enclosed vial. You do not have to collect the sample on the first nail trim-just wait until you or your groomer or person who does nails for you can help. It is not a violation of state animal rules/laws to help a animal owner collect the sample. Most dogs would rather avoid the intavenous collection and vote for the nail trim instead. ( I have asked them!!) Mail it to our licensed Vet Lab. Save time and up to $100.

 Why don't you write prescriptions?

Licensed veterinarians are barred from writing prescriptions unless we physically see the pet. Therefore we can not write a prescription unless we have performed an examination on your pets in our office or provided a free examination at one of the shows, nor can we advise you to purchase ivermectin in any of the international products sold on the internet and used safely throughout the world. (The ivermectin in most of these preventative products are made by the same company in the same plant).  However, other pet owners, breeders, rescue club personnel, etc who have used the various versions of heartguard or ivermectin (which is made by the same company and is the same drug but costs 90-95% less) can.  See the heartworm testimonial section for their comments.

Can I sell these to others or my customers?
This is a great income source for groomers, trainers, pet shops, or pet owners. "Every day, I see pet owners who have not tested their dogs for heartworm. In my area, 15% of dogs who are not on heartworm preventatives get heartworm disease, which is completely preventable. You can make $40-100 in 1-2 minutes selling these kits to your present friends or customers. Call 1-269-921-4197 to discuss with Dr. Hadaway.

Who wants or needs these kits?

EVERYONE, but the 90% of dog owners who can not afford everything that we veterinarians suggest that you do every year to keep your pets healthy. Many dog owners do not test their dog, mostly because of the cost or inconvenience. Many pet owners have three or more pets, and need a more affordable alternative. We provide this convenient, accurate, easy, and affordable alternative. I first used this testing alternative on one of my clients who had 33 dogs, more than 10 years ago. He lived near a Humane Society and all the dogs that were dropped off came to his house. He had a heart of gold, but unfortunately did not own a gold mine, so he and I worked out this approach where he collected the samples on routine  For years my clients who used this approach encouraged me to make this test available to all other dog owners, and so I did. We do not advertise so tell all your friends about use.The important thing is that all of the diseases that we test for are treatable, if detected early enough, and we make all testing affordable so test now. Every dog goes outside. If they are outside for only one minute a day, they still can be bitten by a mosquito or tick.
